Day 8 – Wednesday, September 10,
2014
Since we are up before 7 am and need
to be quiet, we walk to WiFi station (which is outdoors.) Again this morning I am sitting with a man
from Sutton, QC. He knows Louise Penny, the author, as she also lives there. His
wife is friends with Penny, in the flesh whereas I am her friend on
Facebook. This man & wife run a
B&B called “Vert le Mont.” He is
originally from Pennsylvania and lived in Vermont for a while before moving to
Quebec.
And I have to get on the move. To the campsite, for breakfast and tea, and
then we need to get our 20 km in, which will bring us back to here, on
foot. Tata for now!
We are back. It was a long day. We have done 21 + kms before but not 17 kms
along the highway. We stopped at least
four times which extends the start and finish time.
We had an early lunch at Hero’s
Welcome, around 10:30 am. Fresh-made
sandwiches on fresh-baked buns with fun names. (details later.) We crossed the street and sat at white picnic tables with view to the lake. Pauline and Dean controlled themselves and
only had the first half of the sandwiches; I almost controlled myself_stopped
after a couple of bites of the second half.
We ate the other half around 1 pm.
I must admit it is easier to walk when we have Dean’s back packer
bars. We hope to still have some of
those when we are in the mountains or somewhere isolated.
Our other stops were at two artisan
stores. Pauline bought a pin for herself
and I bought one for Dean. We bought a
few more things.
We crossed a bridge today, the one
that takes us onto Grand Isle. We were
confused yesterday. Even though it is a
draw bridge, it was an uneventful crossing compared to my fishing opportunity
yesterday. I did notice a tractor in the
water at the cove! A boat came in and
floated onto a boat trailer attached to the tractor. Mystery solved!
Like yesterday, I abandoned by back
pack about seven kms before the end as my back was getting tired. It provided
some relief for a while. We came to the
second studio. The owners have 15 angora goats and they had lovely things made
of mohair which we managed to resist.
Dean came away with a photo of a small horse made of driftwood.
We were happy for the last three kms
on East Shore South Rd. Pauline and I
stopped at the Forest Fire Ranger’s vegetable stand. We picked two fresh cobs
of corn and left a dollar.
Wonder if the natives that were part
of the raid had dry corn with them?
We were happy that we only had to
drive around the corner today as our walk ended at Grand Isle. Tonight it is
going to rain. So Dean wanted to take
the screen tent down. We helped him move
the picnic table out of the screen tent, then headed to the showers for some
muscle-relaxing warm water. It costs two
quarters to take a 5-minute shower. I
started a new tradition yesterday by taking some clothes, like dirty socks,
into the shower with me. Got to get our
money’s worth. The hot water runs out
but I continue with my laundry standing off to the side. (No photos available.)
We now have 138 kms completed.
